CH4 Facts: Paint

April 7, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

As we continue to discuss the nature of natural gas uses in the home environment, let’s look at paint. William Cowper wrote that “Variety is the very spice of life,” and it’s most evident in our color choices, including every shade of paint from an emo teenager’s favorite color to the neon paint schemes of the 1980’s. The brushes, rollers, sprayers, and painting supplies can all be traced back to an oil and gas input. If you have a specific question about the uses of natural gas, send us a message, or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

CH4 Facts: Flooring

March 31, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

Continuing our review of natural gas uses, this week we’re going to look at flooring. Regardless of the choice of material, the oil and gas industry is heavily involved. From a fuel source for the kilns used to dry porcelain, ceramic, brick, and wood flooring, to the feed stock for carpet and padding manufacturing. From the structural components for building like concrete and lumber, to the finishes like polyurethane and stain preventative, oil and gas are required. Even the process of mining to delivery of natural stones like travertine, granite, and marble, oil and gas are necessary every step of the way. If you have a specific question, send us a message or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

CH4 Facts: Creature Comforts

March 24, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

What makes a home a home versus “roughing it?” It’s the creature comforts we’ve come to enjoy. We have discussed heating your home, insulating, building, and cooking, but we haven’t discussed the other appliances. On-demand water heaters are more efficient than tank water heaters. Dual fuel refrigerators are common in RVs and campers in the U.S., but in other areas, they allow for reliable food and medicine storage where the power grid is unreliable. Natural gas dryers are also an option. And gas-fueled lighting can add an authentic charm straight out of New Orleans. If you have a specific question, send us a message or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

CH4 Facts: Fasteners

March 17, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

Who would have thought that natural gas would have so many uses in the home? Let’s talk fasteners — they literally hold your life together and are everywhere, from securing your walls to the foundation to holding your roofing material on, and everywhere in between. Screws, nails, clips, ties, bolts, and a myriad of other devices hold your home together, and natural gas fuels the manufacturing of those components. If you have a specific question, send us a message or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

CH4 Facts: The Use of Natural Gas in Glass Manufacturing

March 3, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

Today, we’re looking at how natural gas plays a part in the glass that’s in our homes. We mentioned how important glass is to food preservation in a past post, but what about other areas of the home? Glass production literally changed the world! It was the first effective way to keep the outside out while still allowing visibility. Glass is also a key component in the lighting that opened the world after dark to us.  Glass has improved our health, our lifestyle, and our safety, and it is most often manufactured in a furnace using natural gas. CH4 Facts: Wood and Lumber Products

February 24, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

As we look further for natural gas uses in and around the home, let’s look at wood and lumber products. The timber industry existed long before oil and gas production became common. But industry capabilities, products, and efficiencies exponentially improved as the availability of safe, affordable energy increased. From harvest machinery, sawmill equipment, and drying kilns to delivery trucks; natural gas plays a key role in the timber industry. CH4 Facts: Home Foundations

February 17, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

Today we’ll look at home foundations as we continue our discussions on natural gas uses in the home. Foundation design can vary depending on location and seismic concerns, but concrete and metal reinforcement are common in most designs. Both components require very high temperatures to manufacture, either in a kiln for the concrete feed stock or a foundry for the rebar or welded wire mat. Natural gas plays a key role in providing the energy for that heat. CH4 Facts: Plumbing Systems

February 10, 2022

CH4 Facts Graphics

Since we are discussing cooking in the home, we are going to look at the home itself over the next couple posts and the materials used within it that rely on natural gas. Let’s start with the plumbing system. Supply line materials like PVC, CPVC, copper, galvanized steel, and black iron can all be traced back to oil and gas feed stock or manufacturing processes. Stainless steel sinks and fiberglass fixtures are much the same. Even the porcelain fixtures in your home are fired in kilns fueled by natural gas.

CH4 Facts: Indoor Pollution from Open Fires

December 16, 2021

CH4 Facts Graphics

Why is it problematic when 33% of the earth’s population still use open fires for cooking? Unfortunately, these cooking methods are responsible for the premature death of almost 4 million people per year. Indoor pollution from cooking can cause pneumonia, stroke, heart disease, COPD, and lung cancer. Natural gas is a much safer and cleaner fuel source for these communities, and we should encourage developments in those areas. If you have a specific question, send us a message or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

CH4 Facts: Polluting Fires vs. Safe, Clean Natural Gas

December 9, 2021

CH4 Facts Graphics

To continue the discussion around food safety and natural gas, the World Health Organization (WHO) says “2.6 billion people cook using polluting open fires or simple stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal.” That’s 33% of the earth’s population. Providing these communities with safe, clean natural gas to heat their homes, cook their food, and power their lives is critical for developing areas. It makes you wonder why anyone would object. If you have a specific question, send us a message or plan to join us at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, May 3-5, 2022 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.
